The Hands of Honour was started as a suport group for homeless and marginalised young and adult men who had fallen by the wayside by either making wrong choices in life or due to circumstance beyond their control,
FROM SUPPORT GROUP to REGISTERED NON-PROFIT ORG.
After being astounded and amazed by the positive response of homeless and drug and alcohol addicted men who responded to our weekly meetings and the subsequent successful rehabilitation of many,it was decided to form an official non-profit organisation.
After recieving our registration no, and official status as a non-profit from the Dept of Social Development ,we strted in all earnest in our quest to address and solve the issue of the alarming and distressing increase of men attending soup kitchens in Cape Town.
SUCCESS and POSITIVE CHANGE
Soon we were averaging 50 young and adult men per weekly meeting and started to work from a sub-economic home.
There they recieved a warn daily meal,a temporary place to stay and all the support and love neede to make their re-intergration into society a speedy and successful one.many lives have been changed and our success can be measured by a SIGNED STATEMENT FROM THE S.A.POLICE SERVICES ACKNOWLEDGING THAT THE WORK WE DO HAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE REDUCTION OF CRIME IN THE AREAS WE OPERATE IN AS REFLECTED IN THE CRIME STATISTICS FOR THOSE AREAS.Many former drug addcits, alcoholics and gansters have forsaken their old ways and are now working, positively contributing to mainstream society as breadwinners and ROLEMODELS FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATION with some even now SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER.
VIOLENCE PREVENTION THROUGH UPGRADING PROGRAMME
We utilise the collective painting, building construction and landscaping skills of former social outcasts to transform spaces that was once used for negative activities into beautiful, safe public spaces conducive to economic development and community healing. After upgrading and restoration by Hands of Honour volunteers the spaces are now CLAIMED BACK BY THE COMMUNITY,never to be used for anti-social behaviour again !!!!!!
The community is now a better place for all to live in and enjoy and there is now a sense of community and family .
