News from GreaterGood SA
Tamzin Ractliffe, founder of the GreaterGood SA Trust, has clinched the Bequeathing Leader Award at the 2007 Gordon Institute of Business Science Colloquium for Social Entrepreneurs. The award recognises social entrepreneurs who are setting an example by leaving strong organisations in their path and moving on to even more suitable uses of their talent. Tamzin has recently handed over the reins to a capable management team led by Carol Tappenden, and is focusing on building the organisation's sustainability through a new technology venture.
New Managing Director Carol Tappenden was recently selected to attend the Global Social Benefit Incubator - an intensive two-week residential programme for dynamic young social entrepreneurs, held at Santa Clara University in Silicon Valley in the US. The programme brought Carol into contact with successful technology innovators from a range of developing countries, sharing ideas about how to scale up their endeavours and achieve sustainability.

Theme of the Month
Caring for our animals across the nation
The first week in October is South Africa's Animal Awareness Week. To locate the animal protection causes currently registered with GreaterGood SA, go to the new website www.myggsa.co.za and click on Find or Explore to choose the dedicated Animal Protection and Rescue pages.
Animal protection and rescue organisations do vital work, particularly in the context of a developing country like ours - they run important public education and awareness programmes to prevent cruelty to all our animals, carry out vaccination and sterilisation of strays, offer affordable veterinary services to pet owners in poor communities, provide temporary shelter for stray and distressed animals, and run programmes to rehome the many abandoned and abused animals in South Africa.
This Month's Feature Article
With the festive season ahead, now is a good time to start planning for caring for your pets over the holiday season. In this month's feature article the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals provides practical advice to make sure pets are not neglected or abandoned at a time of year when many people are away from home.

Who is giving and receiving this month?
On the 1st of September, the Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha, Cape Town held a very successful kennel building day. Wood was donated to the public in the form of old pallets, garage doors and props from old film sets. Participants brought along hammers and Mdzananda provided paint and nails. Thanks to the over 40 people from Constantia, Woodstock, Mowbray, Harfield Village and Khayelitsha who participated! See Mdzananda's reportback...
Freeme Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre would like to thank K A Norris who gave to the centre through GreaterGood SA, as well as Riaan Venter (of Strictly Come Dancing fame) and Michelle Garforth. All their donations enabled the clinic to undergo a recent overhaul, to better treat the injured animals in their care - currently owls, eagle, buzzard, falcon, goshawk, secretary bird, hadedahs, meerkats, tortoises, bush baby and foxes! See Freeme's reportback...
The South African Mass Animal Sterilisation Trust is looking for donations to complete the process of converting a container into the first ever sterilisation clinic in Khayelitsha in the Western Cape. To find out more click here

Good lifestyle choices
Stunning photos available from SASIX exhibition
Just over a year ago, the JSE hosted the GreaterGood South Africa Trust for the launch of SASIX, South Africa's first social investment exchange. In September we hosted a photographic exhibition in the JSE foyer, showcasing photographs by Simone Scholtz of a wide variety of inspiring social development projects, to mark the occasion of SASIX's first anniversary.
SASIX is a pioneering social capital marketplace listing evaluated social investment offerings on its website, www.sasix.co.za. Some 33 projects in 11 development sectors are available for investment, while a further 25 fully subscribed projects are currently being implemented. The projects showcased in the photographic display provide a visual account of the impact these projects are having in their communities.
Limited edition photographs are now on sale through our website, in colour or black-and-white, framed or unframed. The proceeds will be used to support the ongoing work of SASIX and its projects. Click through to A Story of Hope to place your order and use our secure online credit card payment service.
