Mother love
As mothers we love our children because, well, they're our children. But there are many brave women who love and care for children who don't have parents of their own. Being a house mother at a children's home is not the easiest job in the world but it can be one of the most rewarding. We spoke to these unsung heroes of our communities about what Mother's Day and mothering means to them.

Literacy: the global picture
Research has shown that literate communities tend to be more equitable, better employed, wealthier and healthier. In fact, so important is literacy to our welfare that the United Nations declared literacy to be a basic human right. Yet an estimated one in five adults is illiterate worldwide - a staggering 774 million people.

Ethical spenders
Cause-related marketing campaigns got the big thumbs up in last month's ethical spending survey with 83.3% of you choosing one product over another because a percentage of the purchase price went to a good cause. And 88.9% stating that this kind of campaign has a positive impact on your attitude to the company running the campaign. The vast majority (83.3%) think South African companies should do more of these kinds of campaigns.

Sweat vs Skill - the great volunteer debate
Only 17% of South Africans volunteer regularly for a cause. People with busy lives find it difficult to commit the time or don't know what they can do for causes near them. Some don't realise the enormous value they can bring to a good cause with their specialist skills or just their good will.
