Reading is freedom
South Africa faces a literacy crisis - with our children performing the worst out of 40 other countries in the recent Progress in International Reading Literacy study. Unless pre-school children get experience of books and reading in their home language, they spend their lives struggling to catch up. Books liberate the mind and boost educational achievement, giving children real choices in life.

Youth Pledge proves unpopular
In last month's Youth Pledge poll 40% of you said you didn't like the idea of a pledge at all; 25% thought it was a good idea but that the wording should be changed; 20% thought it was a great idea and 15% thought it was a waste of time. A few of you offered alternative wording for the Pledge. We liked this one the best:
"We the youth of South Africa will respect and protect the dignity of each person. We sincerely declare that we shall uphold the rights and values of our Constitution and promise to act in accordance with the duties and responsibilities that flow from these rights."
