Impact

GreaterGood SA is uniquely positioned in the CSI field because we have in-depth knowledge about the development world as well as an understanding of the realities of Corporate Social Investment programmes and how they work. Our results speak for themselves.

We\'ve raised nearly R12 million for projects, and last year alone we:

  • Provided advisory services to 80 corporate clients with more than R70 million in CSI funding.
  • Developed CSI policies and strategies for 17 major companies
  • Created volunteering opportunities for over 3,575 corporate employees
  • Distributed 36,741 cases of surplus Unilever products and 632,218 surplus Woolworths products to beneficiaries around South Africa.

Client Case Studies

We`ve included a few case studies below, to give you an idea of what we do and what well-planned CSI projects can achieve. They illustrate the wide range of options available to corporate clients – from employee volunteering to strategy development, training, beneficiary project identification and surplus goods distribution.

Employee volunteering – Media 24

GreaterGood SA ran a two-month employee volunteer programme for Media24’s 11,000 staff countrywide where we identified literacy-related volunteer projects near all their offices around South Africa. The programme included a competition element where volunteer efforts were reviewed and the best volunteer project was awarded R20,000 to donate to the project where they volunteered. A communication and marketing campaign was also developed to motivate staff to get involved.

“We really appreciated the web-based resource that GreaterGood SA provided for this programme. Media 24 staff are based all over the country and the dedicated website allowed all our staff to access the volunteering opportunities available, sign-up and even nominate their own volunteering projects.”
Adrie Jurgensen, Media24 Group Coordinator: CSI

CSI Strategy Development – Old Mutual Investment Group Property Investments

Working with Old Mutual management, we developed a CSI strategy which was aligned to the business’ mission and corporate objectives. The > initial development of the proposal involved a half day workshop run by GreaterGood with key Old Mutual staff involved in CSI. The workshop covered the CSI objectives, key investment focus areas, funding criteria, decision-making structures, evaluation and monitoring procedures, reporting systems and employee involvement.

Once a strategy document was developed, we worked with their CSI Co-coordinator to design an implementation plan to activate the strategy which included project budget allocations, timelines and project selection. Old Mutual Investment Group has started implementing their strategy, investing in a retail development project in the informal settlements in Cape Town which GreaterGood SA sourced.

CSI Training – Medihelp

We designed specific training materials and conducted a one-day employee volunteer training workshop for Medihelp’s employee volunteer committee. The training covered topics such as:
  • Good practice in CSI in the development sectors
  • Implementing an effective CSI programme
  • CSI communication and employee volunteering focusing specifically on how to set up, run, communicate and evaluate an employee volunteer programme.

21 staff members attending the training and all received comprehensive training manuals.

Project identification – Bearing Man Group

Bearing Man Group contracted GreaterGood SA to identify a maths, science and technology project in the greater Durban area which was serving disadvantaged communities in line with their CSI programme’s education key focus area. GreaterGood SA sourced relevant proposals, according to Bearing Man Group’s brief, from non-profit organisations throughout South Africa. After extensive desk and field research, we identified the Umgungundlovu FET College Maths and Science Education Development Project in Pietermaritzburg. The project provides maths and science education support to learners and educators in schools in Umgungdlovu and has achieved great success to date.

“We were looking for very specific type of development project to invest in and GreaterGood SA found us an amazing project in a very under-resourced area, where the impact of our investment will be that much greater.”
Veronique Bezuidenhout, Marketing Manager, Bearing Man Group

Surplus product distribution – Woolworths

Over the last two years, GreaterGood SA has been co-ordinating responses to the thousands of requests for donations Woolworths receives each month. We also identify worthy non-profit organisations across South Africa for Woolworths’ surplus product distributions. Last year alone we distributed over 85,000 items of Woolworths surplus clothing to needy beneficiaries. Through GreaterGood SA’s screening process, Woolworths can be sure that the most deserving organisations receive their surplus goods.

“Thanks for helping us make the difference.”
